One of our favorite hot spot near Antigua, is Finca el Pilar, a private protected area with a nice dry and cloud forest. It offers you some great birds to see as well as hummingbirds, trogons and between other nice birds species
Lake Atitlan is alsi one of the best spots for birdwatching, and also home of several endemic birds of the higlands of Guatemala and Mexico. Birds that you can see are like blue-and-white mockingbird, prevot's ground sparrow, blue-throdated motmot
Our day trips are based from Antigua, Guatemala City and Lake Atitlan to see Pink-heade warbler, azure rumped tanager and horned guan. Most day trips for us start as usually 4 - 5am.
Horned Guan is a unique member of the Cracid Family, (Named after the unusual red horn of bare skin on the top of its head). Horned Guan lives in isolated populations in cloudforests on the highest mountain peaks and volcanoes in Guatemala and the neighboring Mexican state of Chiapas. The tota of occupation area has a size less than 7000mks2. Horned Guan is clasified as Endanger because habitat destruction and hunting are threatening the small population. Horned Guan can be seen in good days on Lake Atitlan at Volcan San Pedro, and also at Tarrales Natural Reserve
Our tours emphasize quality of birdwatching: our primary aim is to guide you to those birds which are truly memorable, localized or hard to find. The remarkable field expertise of our guides makes them particularly well equipped to find those sought-after species that are the most important highlights of a successful birding tour.
